FAQs:
Which Sony lenses are compatible with the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters?
The Sony 1.4x and 2x teleconverters are designed specifically for use with select Sony G Master and G-series telephoto and super-telephoto lenses. Compatible models include the FE 70-200mm f2.8 GM OSS, FE 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 GM OSS, FE 400mm f2.8 GM OSS, and FE 600mm f4 GM OSS, among others. It is important to check Sony's official compatibility list, as performance is optimised only with designated lenses.
How does using a teleconverter affect autofocus speed and accuracy?
When used with compatible Sony lenses and cameras, the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters maintain high levels of autofocus speed and accuracy. Sony’s advanced AF algorithms ensure that features such as Real-time Eye AF, Real-time Tracking, and continuous autofocus operate effectively, even with the added magnification. However, users may experience a slight reduction in maximum AF speed, particularly with the 2x teleconverter in lower light conditions.
What optical impact should I expect when using the teleconverters?
Sony’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters are engineered to minimise optical degradation by using high-quality elements that match the performance of G Master lenses. The 1.4x converter has a negligible effect on sharpness and contrast, while the 2x converter introduces a minor loss of resolution and a slightly narrower aperture range. However, both converters maintain excellent optical quality suitable for professional wildlife, sports, and news photography.
Does image stabilisation still work when using these teleconverters?
Yes, image stabilisation continues to function when Sony teleconverters are attached to compatible lenses and camera bodies. The Optical SteadyShot built into the lens and the sensor-shift stabilisation from the camera are fully supported. This ensures handheld shooting remains viable, even at extended focal lengths, allowing photographers to achieve sharp images without the need for a tripod in many situations.
What are the weight and size differences between the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters?
The Sony 1.4x teleconverter weighs approximately 167 grams and measures about 62.4 x 33.6 mm, while the 2x teleconverter weighs approximately 207 grams with dimensions of 62.4 x 42.7 mm. Both models are designed to be highly portable, making them convenient additions to a professional kit without significantly increasing overall gear weight or size, which is particularly beneficial for travel and fieldwork.
