Sony’s FE 8-14mm f3.5 Fisheye G lens introduces a new lens type to the E-mount G Lens range as its first native fisheye zoom, combining a compact, lightweight design with an 8-14mm zoom range. Rather than providing a single fixed fisheye perspective, the zoom moves from circular fisheye at 8mm to diagonal fisheye at 14mm, with a 180-degree fisheye angle of view. The f3.5 aperture remains constant throughout the range, and a 16-element, 13-group optical design delivers high resolution into the periphery.

Combining an ultra-wide angle of view with compact, lightweight construction, the lens provides flexible fisheye framing without adding significant size or weight to the camera setup. Internal zoom and focusing maintain consistent external dimensions, while the three-position zoom lock secures settings for full-frame circular fisheye, full-frame diagonal fisheye and APS-C diagonal fisheye capture. Focus Hold and an aperture click switch provide further protection against unintended adjustments. The lens marks a notable extension of the E-mount system into specialist fisheye and VR photography and video, providing a practical way to explore distinctive perspectives and immersive content.

Optical design for fisheye zoom capture

The 8-14mm zoom offers multiple fisheye formats in a single E-mount lens, producing a circular fisheye image at 8mm before shifting to diagonal fisheye coverage at 14mm. The lens captures an ultra-wide 180-degree fisheye angle of view, using zoom to control how that field sits within the image rather than locking it to a single fisheye presentation. A constant f3.5 maximum aperture remains unchanged while zooming, with a seven-blade circular aperture controlling the opening.

A 16-element, 13-group optical construction features two aspherical elements to minimise aberrations, four ED elements to suppress chromatic aberration, and one ED aspherical element to control chromatic aberration and field curvature simultaneously. This combination maintains clear detail and sharpness throughout the zoom range and into the image periphery, while suppressing internal reflections to reduce flare and ghosting. These characteristics provide controlled circular, diagonal and intermediate fisheye compositions for landscapes, architecture, cities, action, sports, and travel.

Close focus and autofocus

The lens’ optical design provides a constant 0.15m minimum focusing distance throughout the zoom range, with maximum magnification reaching 0.22x. This lets you place foreground subjects close to the lens while retaining the broad surrounding fisheye field, without the minimum focusing distance changing as you adjust the focal length.

Two linear motors provide fast, accurate autofocus when paired with advanced camera bodies, maintaining subject tracking at high burst rates on cameras such as the Sony A9 III. Linear Response MF responds directly to focus-ring input for predictable manual adjustment when you need precise focus placement. Together, they provide high-speed AF for moving subjects and direct manual control when you need precise focus.

Video performance

Internal zoom and internal focusing keep focal length and focus adjustments contained within the lens, maintaining a consistent external configuration during recording. The two linear motors also support autofocus tracking during high-frame-rate movie recording, enabling fast, accurate tracking of moving subjects. The optical design also suppresses focus breathing, reducing framing changes as focus adjusts, while compatible Sony camera bodies can apply in-body breathing compensation when further correction is needed. Alongside the consistent f3.5 aperture, these systems provide consistent framing, focusing and aperture operation when focal length or focus needs to change while recording video.

Fisheye controls

Separate focus, zoom, and aperture controls prevent unintended changes once you have chosen the required lens settings. The three-position focus mode switch provides AF, MF, and FH (Focus Hold) settings, with Focus Hold keeping a manually set focus position fixed for still, video, astrophotography, and VR shooting. An aperture click switch helps prevent accidental iris-ring operation, switching between 1/3-step click stops or stepless control, while the zoom lock secures the lens at 8mm for full-frame circular fisheye, 14mm for full-frame diagonal fisheye and an intermediate position for APC-C diagonal fisheye.

Lightweight, field-ready design

For field use, the compact lens weighs just 314g, keeping it easy to carry alongside other E-mount optics and reducing overall rig weight for handheld shooting and travel. Its dust- and moisture-resistant construction limits ingress outdoors, although the lens is not completely dust- or moisture-proof. A fluorine coating on the front element repels water, oil, contaminants and fingerprints, helping keep the exposed optical surface clear and making it easier to clean. A specially designed removable lens hood provides further protection for the exposed front element when shooting with diagonal fisheye framing.
