The Sony XLR-A4 XLR Adaptor brings 32-bit float recording, 96kHz audio, and four-channel input to Sony’s latest Alpha bodies through a direct digital Multi Interface Shoe connection. Positioned as Sony’s next-generation on-camera audio solution, it captures a far wider dynamic range than conventional adapters, holding detail from quiet dialogue through to sudden peaks without clipping. The reinforced low-profile design also keeps rigs compact and cable-free when working handheld, on cages, or on gimbals.

Sony XLR-A4 XLR Adaptor Key Features:

  • Professional XLR adaptor records 32-bit float audio at 96kHz resolution
  • Dual ADC system captures quieter signals with lower background noise
  • 32-bit float recording prevents clipping during sudden volume changes
  • Four-channel input supports interviews, ambient tracks, and multi-mic setups
  • Digital MI Shoe connection transfers audio directly into compatible cameras
  • Cable-free design connects power and audio through the camera shoe
  • Two XLR/TRS inputs support microphones with 48V phantom power
  • Stereo mini-jack input accepts compact microphones and wireless receivers
  • Low-profile reinforced construction balances cleanly on cages and gimbals
  • 60cm extension cable supports flexible rig mounting positions
  • USB Audio compatibility connects directly to computers for studio recording
  • Powered entirely through compatible Sony camera Multi Interface Shoe
  • Compatible exclusively with Sony Alpha cameras from the A7 V onwards

What’s new?

The Sony XLR-A4 builds directly on the earlier XLR-K3M, adding higher-resolution 96kHz recording, 32-bit float capture, dual ADC processing, and USB audio output. Where the XLR-K3M required more careful gain management during unpredictable recording, the newer adaptor captures a far wider dynamic range before clipping occurs, making it easier to recover both quiet dialogue and sudden peaks during editing. Sony has also revised the physical layout with updated controls and a longer 60cm extension cable, giving crews more flexibility when positioning the adaptor on cages, gimbals, or compact cinema rigs.

32-bit float recording and dual ADC processing

The defining feature of the XLR-A4 is its 32-bit float recording combined with dual analogue-to-digital converters. One converter prioritises quieter signals while the second handles louder peaks, and the recorder continuously blends the two. Physically, this means the adaptor captures a much wider dynamic range before distortion occurs. During interviews, documentary work, or live events, operators no longer need to constantly adjust gain levels when subjects suddenly raise their voice or move closer to the microphone. Instead of clipped peaks flattening into harsh digital distortion, the signal retains usable detail that can later be adjusted cleanly in editing.

Direct digital integration through the MI Shoe

Rather than routing analogue audio through cables to the camera body, the XLR-A4 transmits audio digitally via Sony’s Multi Interface Shoe. Sliding the adaptor directly onto the camera provides both the audio connection and power supply, eliminating the need for separate batteries or trailing leads. This design keeps rigs physically cleaner and reduces strain around ports when working handheld or on stabilisers. Because the signal remains digital from the adaptor to the camera, synchronisation remains precise, and background interference is reduced compared with external analogue connections.

Four-channel recording flexibility

The adaptor supports up to four simultaneous audio channels, giving crews far more flexibility when building compact production rigs. Two full-size XLR/TRS inputs support professional microphones with optional 48V phantom power, while the third stereo mini-jack input accepts smaller microphones or wireless receivers. This layout makes it possible to run dual-interview microphones while capturing a separate ambient track, or to combine boom and wireless systems without adding an external recorder. Dedicated physical controls on the adaptor also keep channel assignment and monitoring close to hand while shooting.

Rig-ready construction and USB audio support

Sony has designed the XLR-A4 around modern compact cinema rigs rather than traditional large broadcast setups. The lower-profile body keeps the centre of gravity closer to the camera, which becomes more noticeable when balancing gimbals or building lightweight shoulder rigs. The supplied 60cm extension cable allows the adaptor to be repositioned onto cages or support arms when extra clearance is needed around monitors or handles. The XLR-A4 also functions as a USB audio interface, allowing microphones connected to the XLR inputs to record directly to a computer for podcasting, voiceover work, or studio production.

FAQs:

Which Sony cameras are compatible with the XLR-A4?

The XLR-A4 has been developed specifically for Sony’s newer digital audio system and is only compatible with camera bodies from the Alpha 7 V generation onwards. Earlier Alpha models, including the A7 IV and previous cameras, do not support the adaptor’s digital communication system or its 32-bit float recording functions.

Can I record a safety track with the XLR-A4?

Yes. The four-channel recording system allows separate channels to be dedicated to lower-level safety recordings alongside primary microphone inputs. In practice, this gives editors a backup track if sudden peaks overload the main recording during interviews, live events, or documentary work.

Does the XLR-A4 support phantom power microphones?

Yes. The two XLR/TRS combo inputs support +48V phantom power for condenser microphones. Phantom power is supplied directly through the adaptor when connected to a compatible Sony camera, so there is no need for separate microphone power supplies or external battery packs.

Can I connect the XLR-A4 directly to a computer?

Yes. The adaptor supports USB Audio output, allowing connected microphones to record directly into a computer without requiring a separate audio interface. This makes it practical for podcasting, livestreaming, voiceover recording, or desktop studio setups using the same microphones as your camera rig.
