The Conquest Apia 65 sits in the part of the spotting scope market where size matters. Zeiss has emphasised keeping things short and light without compromising the view, making this scope ideal for birders and wildlife watchers who are covering a lot of ground. At 30cm long and 1.35kg, it’s built to travel well and stay manageable on long days outside.

Bright, sharp optics without the bulk

The strength of the Zeiss Conquest Apia 65 is that its compact body does not come at the expense of a bright, relaxed view. Zeiss implements its HD concept here, with 87% light transmission, ZEISS T* coating, FieldFlattener technology, ED glass, and aspherical lenses, all working together to keep the image bright, high-contrast, and sharp across the frame. In all, the scope features 15 lens elements and P-coated roof prisms to improve clarity and resolution. The field of view runs from 48m to 27m at 1,000m, with a subjective viewing angle of 54° to 71°, so the image feels open rather than boxed in.

A zoom range that makes sense

The 20–50x eyepiece feels well-judged for real observation rather than headline reach. At 20x, you still have enough width to scan shorelines, reedbeds or distant hillsides comfortably, and, at 50x, you can move in close enough to check finer detail when the scene needs a second look. Zeiss’s 2.5x zoom range is a deliberate balance between magnification, field of view, viewing comfort and compact body size. It also keeps the scope easier to use over time, with 17mm eye relief and a close focus distance of under 3.5m.

Controls that feel sorted from the start

A spotting scope can have good optics and still slow you down if the controls are awkward. The Apia 65 is at its strongest here. The focus wheel sits ahead of the scope foot, so your hand naturally reaches it when the scope is mounted. Additionally, the large, raised focus and zoom wheels are easy to find by feel, even with gloves on. Focus runs from close focus to infinity in 1.2 turns, while the zoom wheel moves from minimum to maximum in 0.3 turns, so adjustments feel quick without becoming shaky. Zeiss also includes a throw lever, which lets you change magnification one-handed without moving your fingers off the focus wheel.

Built for weather, handling and regular use

The housing uses magnesium and aluminium alloy with protective rubber armouring, so it feels made for regular field use rather than careful treatment. It is nitrogen-filled, waterproof to 2 metres for 2 hours to IPX8 standard, and rated for operating temperatures from -25°C to +50°C. Zeiss also adds LotuTec coating, which helps water bead off and makes dirt less likely to stick to the glass. Practical details are well covered, with an extendable sunshade, a comfortable eyecup, and a compact, lightweight Arca-Swiss compatible foot for quick tripod mounting.
