What’s new?

The Canon EOS R8 Mark II builds on the EOS R8 in the EOS R hybrid range, maintaining its core imaging performance and straightforward operation while introducing several key upgrades. Positioned above the EOS RP and EOS R8, it retains 24.2MP resolution, native ISO 100-102,400, 40fps electronic shooting and 4K 60p video oversampled from 6K. New sensor-shift image stabilisation provides up to 7.5 stops of correction for handheld photography, while Movie Digital IS provides additional electronic correction during video recording. Dual Pixel CMOS AF II uses deep-learning recognition to track people, animals and vehicles, with Register People Priority to keep selected subjects in focus.

The body introduces a revised ergonomic EOS design and more direct controls, while dual-band 2.4GHz/5GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth provide wireless transfer and remote camera operation. Automatic backup through image.canon reduces the need to initiate file backup manually, while USB-C supports charging and livestreaming, expanding the camera’s direct video output options. Filmtone Colour Filters, Picture Styles, Custom Picture, and Look File support provide several ways to control colour in-camera for creative looks with minimal editing. Oversampled 4K 60p from 6K, Full HD recording at up to 180fps, Movie Digital IS, four-channel audio and 2.35:1 Cinema View extend the R8 series' recording capabilities.

24.2MP full-frame sensor

The EOS R8 Mark II combines a 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor with a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-102,400 and Canon’s DIGIC X processor. The full-frame imaging area captures detailed photographs with natural depth, while the broad sensitivity range provides exposure flexibility as available light changes. Electronic shutter speeds extend to 1/16,000 sec in compatible exposure modes, providing additional exposure control when photographing fast movement or using wider apertures in bright light. Together, the full-frame sensor and DIGIC X processing provide the core imaging architecture for detailed everyday, travel and portrait photography.

Electronic continuous shooting operates at up to 40fps, allowing the sensor to record closely spaced frames during short periods of movement. A larger buffer than the EOS R8 lets the camera store more image data during continuous capture. Pre-continuous shooting continuously prepares frames before full shutter release and can retain up to 20 images from the preceding 0.5 seconds. This shifts part of the capture window ahead of the photographer's final shutter input. For wildlife, sports and other short-duration movement, it provides additional frames immediately before the intended moment.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II uses deep-learning subject recognition to identify people, animals and vehicles across the frame. Within people detection, the system can track eyes, faces, heads and bodies, allowing autofocus to continue using different identifying features as the subject's presentation changes. AF sensitivity extends to -7.5EV, supporting focus acquisition in lower light.

Register People Priority adds a further layer of subject selection when photographing people. By registering selected individuals, the autofocus system learns which person should receive priority when multiple people are available for detection. This gives the camera a defined subject preference rather than requiring the photographer to repeatedly redirect autofocus. It is particularly useful when one person needs to remain the principal focus within a group.

Image stabilisation

Sensor-shift image stabilisation provides the EOS R8 Mark II with up to 7.5 stops of correction, adding body-based shake compensation that was not available on the EOS R8. The sensor-based system compensates for camera movement during handheld capture, reducing visible shake and enabling slower shutter speeds. With compatible stabilised RF lenses, coordinated control allows optical lens IS and in-body stabilisation to operate together. This correction gives greater shutter-speed flexibility when the camera is used without a tripod or other external support. It also adds a significant stabilisation capability to the compact full-frame R8 format.

For video, Movie Digital IS provides electronic correction specifically for recorded footage. The system adjusts the recorded image to reduce visible movement during handheld recording. This gives you more control over framing when recording without a stabilising rig. The physical and digital stabilisation systems therefore provide separate methods of reducing camera movement during capture.

4K 60p and Full HD 180fps video

The EOS R8 Mark II records 4K video at up to 60p using an image oversampled from 6K source data. Oversampling processes the higher-resolution sensor information into the final 4K output, providing more source detail than a direct lower-resolution readout. This gives the camera a detailed 4K recording mode while retaining frame rates up to 60p. Canon Log 3 provides a flatter tonal response with greater latitude for adjusting colour and contrast in post-production. Full HD recording reaches 180fps, allowing fast-moving action to be played back in slow motion.

The video system also includes 2.35:1 Cinema View for composing footage in a wider presentation format. Four-channel audio expands the available recording configuration when you use compatible audio equipment. Together, these systems provide additional control over picture composition and audio capture.

In-camera colour controls

Canon Picture Styles and Filmtone Colour Filters provide in-camera ways to change an image's rendered colour and tonal response. Because these adjustments are applied through the camera's imaging controls, photographers can select a defined rendering without relying exclusively on later editing. Scene-based colour modes offer another way to match the camera's colour treatment to the subject being photographed. These options let you make colour decisions during capture.

Custom Picture and Look File support extend those controls into more configurable colour workflows. Look File support allows compatible LUT-based looks to be incorporated into the camera's imaging options, while Custom Picture provides another adjustable route for defining the recorded appearance. Together with Filmtone Colour Filters and Picture Styles, these systems provide several levels of control depending on how much adjustment is required.

Connectivity and media

The EOS R8 Mark II uses a single SD card slot with UHS-II support, providing the write speeds required for higher-data-rate recording and continuous shooting when compatible media is used. Dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi works with Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless image and video transfer, remote camera control and automatic cloud backup through image.canon. This lets you transfer or back up files without a wired connection.

USB-C supports data transfer, charging, external power and UVC/UAC streaming at up to 4K 60p, allowing the camera to be used for video calls and livestreaming without a separate capture device. HDMI output, microphone and headphone connections, a remote terminal and the Multi-Function Shoe provide additional options for monitoring, audio and accessories. Together, these connections provide flexible ways to record, transfer, and share content.

Design and operation

Canon’s EOS R8 Mark II uses a revised ergonomic EOS body designed around portability and direct physical operation. At approximately 499g (body only), it retains a relatively low body weight for a full-frame interchangeable-lens camera. The revised design and controls are intended to reduce the time required to reach frequently used camera functions. This supports faster setting changes when the subject or composition changes.

Its overall format is comparable in size to an APS-C DSLR while housing a full-frame imaging sensor. The combination reduces the physical size of the camera system without changing the sensor format. For travel and everyday photography, this keeps the body portable while retaining access to Canon’s RF lens system.
