The sensor and processor match the highly regarded X100VI, combining the 40.2 megapixel X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor with Fujifilm’s X-Processor 5. Unlike the X100VI’s fixed lens design, the X-E5 supports the complete Fujifilm X Mount lens system, providing creative flexibility across a wide range of focal lengths. Compared to models such as the X-T5, the X-E5 delivers the same generation of core imaging technology in a smaller, lighter body optimised for travel, street photography and everyday use.

The X-E5 features Fujifilm’s 40.2-megapixel back-illuminated X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, which increases light-gathering efficiency for improved detail and cleaner images at an ISO 125 base sensitivity. Extended ISO settings allow for additional flexibility when managing dynamic range and noise levels. Paired with the X-Processor 5, the camera delivers fast image processing, refined colour rendering and supports advanced computational functions that assist with autofocus, image stabilisation and in-camera adjustments. The X-E5 utilises Fujifilm’s latest autofocus system, which combines phase-detection and contrast-detection technologies for fast and accurate focusing in various conditions. AI-based subject detection identifies humans, animals, birds, vehicles, insects, and drones, allowing the photographer to concentrate on composition while automatically tracking subjects. The system operates effectively in low-light environments down to -7.0 EV when paired with lenses such as the XF 50mm f1.0. Working alongside the autofocus system is the new 5-axis in-body image stabilisation unit, which offers up to 7.0 stops of compensation. This technology helps photographers achieve sharp results when shooting handheld at slower shutter speeds or using telephoto lenses.

Video recording options for hybrid content creators

The X-E5 records 6.2K video at up to 30 frames per second, utilising the full width of the sensor to deliver detailed footage without crop. Full HD video can be captured at up to 240 frames per second, allowing for smooth slow-motion sequences. The camera supports 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording in both HEVC/H.265 and H.264 formats, giving flexibility for colour grading and post-production. Continuous autofocus remains active during video capture, maintaining accurate subject tracking when filming people, wildlife or moving scenes.

The Fujifilm XF 23mm f2.8 R WR is an ultra-compact wide-angle prime for X Series cameras. Measuring 23mm in length and weighing 90g, it offers a highly portable option with a field of view equivalent to 35mm on full-frame systems, making it well-suited to travel, street, and everyday photography. Its 8-element, 6-group optical design, including two aspherical elements, minimises aberrations and delivers sharpness across the frame, even on Fujifilm’s latest 40.2MP sensors. The f2.8 aperture and 11-blade rounded diaphragm provide smooth bokeh for portraits and close-up work, supported by a 0.2m minimum focusing distance and 0.15x magnification. Fast, quiet DC autofocus ensures responsive performance for both stills and video, while full weather sealing allows reliable operation in challenging outdoor conditions.

Film Simulation dial and in-camera colour control

The X-E5 features Fujifilm’s set of 20 Film Simulation modes, allowing photographers to apply colour profiles directly inspired by Fujifilm’s film heritage. Profiles such as PROVIA, Velvia, ASTIA, Classic Chrome, REALA ACE, Nostalgic Neg and ETERNA Bleach Bypass deliver distinct colour and tonal characteristics suited to portrait, documentary, travel and commercial work. A dedicated Film Simulation dial allows fast access to these profiles, and users can store custom Film Simulation recipes for immediate use in the field. Further in-camera controls include Colour Chrome Effect, Smooth Skin Effect, grain adjustments, monochrome toning and extended white balance options, giving photographers complete creative control over the final image without the need for extensive post-processing.

Build quality, handling improvements and user-focused design

The X-E5 maintains the compact, lightweight design of the X-E series while introducing several refinements to build and handling. Its aluminium top plate increases structural strength and provides a high-quality finish, while the 445g weight keeps the camera practical for travel and everyday photography. The 180-degree tilting LCD allows for flexible compositions at high or low angles, as well as front-facing framing for vlogging or group shots. The Classic Display mode simplifies viewfinder information to keep the focus on composition, while Surround View expands the frame to help monitor movement outside the active shooting area.
