Lighting Department

Welcome to our complete catalogue of lighting and studio equipment for photographers. At Wex, we offer a huge range of lights, kits, light stands, studio backgrounds and lighting accessories for photographers, catering to all budgets and skill levels. Whether you need a simple burst of flash or a comprehensive multi-panel setup, we’ve got everything you need to kit yourself out with lighting and studio equipment.

At the heart of the majority of studio setups are flash heads and kits, also sometimes referred to as monolights. Studio flash heads are designed to offer a high degree of both power and adjustability, meaning you can tune them to provide precisely the level of light you need for your shot. Flash heads can generally be purchased on their own, or as part of a kit with stands, reflectors and other accessories. These kits are an excellent starting point if you’re building a studio setup from scratch.

Lighting and Studio

Some studio photographers favour continuous lighting LEDs. Continuous lights, just as they sound, provide a sustained source of constant light, as opposed to a brief burst. While you don’t get the same level of power as you do from flash, continuous light can be very handy for fine-tuning your setup in real time. They’re particularly useful for video – ring lights are a popular form of continuous light, especially on TikTok and similar platforms.

For more portable lighting options, you may want to look at flashguns, which can be mounted directly to a camera’s hotshoe or to a separate stand. Flashguns are especially useful for freezing high-speed motion, allowing the photographer to shoot at much faster shutter speeds than they’d be able to without the powerful burst of light. Another popular form of on-camera light is macro ring flash, which is specifically optimised to provide balanced lighting for ultra-close up images.

Good lighting isn’t only about the lights themselves. Lighting control is a hugely important consideration for any serious photographer. Transforming artificial light from harsh and angular to even and flattering often relies on a key roster of lighting control accessories. These can include reflectors, softboxes, diffusers, umbrellas and more – inexpensive items, but ones that will prove their value many times over. Having the right studio background is also essential for ensuring that you’re keeping your viewer’s attention on your subject where it belongs, and your images aren’t filled with visual clutter.

There are also plenty more practicalities to consider with a lighting setup. Lighting stands and supports are essential for being able to place your lights where you need them, and you may also want to invest in lighting cases if you’re going to be transporting your setup from place to place. Light meters can be useful additions to your kit – while the majority of digital cameras have robust internal metering systems, many photographers prefer the detailed accuracy and positional flexibility of a hand-held light meter, especially for measuring incidental light.

Learning to control your own lighting is a hugely important step for any serious photographer – and it starts with the right kit.
